Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Applications Due January 1, 2023
The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center announces the application period for Summer 2023 and Academic Year 2023-2024 FLAS Fellowships. The funding will be available for the study of Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Quechua. The fellowship assists in the advancement of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for foreign language and studies, and supports the development of a qualified pool of international experts with global competence designed to meet U.S. national needs.
USAID Will Host Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Conference and Career Expo at FIU
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will host its second annual HSI Conference and Career Expo October 18-20, 2022. Events on October 18-19 will be virtual and those on October 20 will take place at the Biscayne Bay Campus at FIU. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about opportunities with USAID and further extend the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Initiative between FIU LACC and USAID.
LACC Welcomes Dr. Gabriela Hoberman as New Director of Academic Programs
Dr. Gabriela Hoberman serves as the LACC Director of Academic Programs and the Faculty Director of LACC’s Study Abroad Program on Politics and International Relations in Argentina. She teaches comparative politics courses in the Department of Politics & International Relations, is a Faculty member of the Master of Arts in Global Affairs and collaborates as an Affiliated Scholar with the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy. Welcome!
Dr. Anthony Pereira Appointed as LACC Director
LACC is pleased to welcome our new Director, Dr. Anthony Pereira. He joins FIU from his previous appointment at King's College London as Professor and Founding Director of the Brazil Institute. Dr. Pereira's research interests include authoritarianism and democracy, human rights, public security policy, environmental issues, and international relations in Latin America and the Caribbean. Welcome Dr. Pereira!
LACC Director of Research Publishes Article in German Newspaper
Dr. Jose Miguel Cruz, LACC Director of Research, published an article on the gang situation throughout El Salvador in the German newspaper, Frankfurter Rundschau. This newspaper is based in Frankfurt and produces regional and nationwide issues as well as an online edition.
LACC Awarded US Department of Education Title VI Grant
The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a 2022-26 US Department of Education Title VI grant. LACC successfully competed for both the National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grants, securing a total award of $2,215,296 (an increase of over $100,000 from the previous award cycle, making it LACC's largest Title VI award to date).
LACC Alumnus Nyya Flores Toussaint Featured in IFLE Newsletter
The U.S. Department of Education featured Nyya Flores Toussaint in the recent issue of the IFLE (International and Foreign Language Education) Newsletter. Nyya is a LACC Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship alumnus who collaborated with FIU faculty member Nicolas André to develop the Haitian Creole language course recently launched through Duolingo.
LACC Receives 2022 Paul Hanson Award from the Miami-Dade Council for the Social Studies (MDCSS)
Every year the MDCSS awards the Paul Hanson Award to a person/institution that has gone above and beyond to serve the Social Studies community through their work with students, schools, the MDCSS, & the Social Studies department in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. LACC has received this prestigious award for its outstanding contributions to South Florida’s academic institutions, resulting from its U.S. Department of Education Title VI Grant programming and initiatives.
LACC Hosts Art of the Americas Author Rebecca Hinson
On June 22-23, LACC will host the K-12 Teacher Training Workshop “Creating the Children’s Book Series Art of the Americas and How You Can Create Yours." Author Rebecca Hinson will explore the journey of book creation and her "Art of the Americas" series, which includes 48 children’s books that interpret the cultures of the Americas.
Walter Abanto to Present at Australian & New Zealand Society of International Law (ANZSIL) Workshop
Walter Abanto, a graduate student in LACC’s joint MA program and International Relations PhD program at Florida International University (FIU), will be presenting his research titled “The Peruvian Architects of Latin American International Law: The Role of José María del Pando and José Silva Santisteban,” on May 27th at the ANZSIL History and Theory of International Law Workshop.
