LACC Associate Director Begins Two Year Term as President of CLASP
LACC Associate Director, Liesl Picard, was elected to serve as President of the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) and began her two-year term of service to the organization on January 1, 2013. As the president, Picard will lead CLASP in its primary mission to promote all facets of Latin American studies and to facilitate resource sharing and collaboration among Latin American Studies programs and professionals across the globe.

30th Annual Journalists & Editors Workshop on Latin America and the Caribbean
Full-day conference examined news coverage of the region with a particular focus on femicide, human trafficking, domestic violence, child sexual abuse and cyber sex crimes. Led by FIU professors, policy experts and media professionals including Univison's Teresa Rodriguez, Judith Torrea and Mirta Rodriguez Calderon.

LACC Relaunches Haiti Study Abroad for Summer 2013!
With support from the FIU Office of the Provost and FIU Study Abroad, LACC is proud to re-launch its Haiti Study Abroad as part of its 16th Annual Haitian Summer Institute. The study abroad is designed to further expose students to Haiti, its culture and its people through a one-week trip to the historical city of Cap Haitien, and provides participants with a unique opportunity to further immerse themselves in Haiti Creole while experiencing the country first-hand.

Florida International University's (FIU) College of Business Latin American Forum, a business development and networking group that brings multinational business leaders to the FIU platform, will be moving from the College of Business to the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), effective September 1, 2013.

Emily Bello-Pardo, a LACC MA candidate, appeared on the Nov. 18 Program Ahora con Oscar Haza (With Oscar Haza) to discuss the political situation in Venezuela. The host recently asked LACC Director Frank Mora to help recruit FIU students to form part of a segment he is launching on his program. Emily joins FIU student Jimmy Diaz and Maria Carolina Gonzalez, ex CNN correspondent in Venezuela, in a 10 minute discussion.

LACC and ARC Awarded New Grant on Security in the LAC Region
LACC and FIU's Applied Research Center (ARC) were awarded a $75k grant from CACI International Inc. to deliver a series of roundtables focused on security in the LAC region. The 1-year grant will attract strong participation from various US government entities including US Southern Command and is designed to address the region's most pressing issues. LACC's Director of Research and Political Science professor, Dr. José Miguel Cruz, serves as the project's co-PI alongside ARC's Brian Fonseca.
New LACC Grant from Open Society Foundation looks at the legalization of marijuana in Uruguay
LACC Research Director Dr. José Miguel Cruz was awarded a $144k ($144,129.00) Open Society Foundation grant to study Uruguay's legalization of marijuana and the transformation of drug policy. The Impact of Marijuana Legalization in Uruguay project will launch January 1, 2014 and will assess the impact of marijuana legalization on attitudes and norms regarding drug production, distribution and consumption in Uruguay and support the training and exchange of knowledge on drug policy in the region.
Monica Weeks, LACC MA (’12), introduces President of the United States, sharing her healthcare story
Monica Weeks, LACC MA (’12), introduced President Barack Obama during a nationally televised speech at the White House on Tuesday, December 3. The speech kicks off a three-week publicity campaign by the White House to raise awareness about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Weeks, 26, shared her personal story of how the ACA benefited her.
