LACC Awarded Prestigious Tinker Field Research Grant

The Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Program is designed to provide budding scholars with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-doctoral research and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields of study. Universities may receive funding at the $10K or $15K level-LACC was awarded the more prestigious $15K grant with the possibility of 2 additional 1-year renewals. LACC's 1:1 match brings total support for Tinker grant awardees to $90K over 3 years.

LACC Awarded $144,129 Open Society Grant to Study the Impact of Marijuana Legalization in Uruguay

LACC was awarded a $144K+ Open Society Foundation grant to study Uruguay's legalization of marijuana and the transformation of drug policy. Led by LACC Research Director, Dr. Jose Miguel Cruz, the project launched January 1, 2014 and assesses the impact of marijuana legalization on attitudes and norms regarding drug production, distribution and consumption in Uruguay and support the training and exchange of knowledge on drug policy in the region.

LACC Welcomes New LACC Academic Programs Director, Dr. Barry Levitt

Associate Professor of Political Science Barry Levitt joined LACC as the new director of academic programs. With expertise in comparative politics, Latin America, democratic institutions and political violence, Levitt teaches at the undergrad and grad levels. He is the author of the book, Power in the Balance: Presidents, Parties, and Legislatures in Peru and Beyond (Notre Dame Press, 2011), has contributed to several edited volumes and published numerous articles in leading scholarly journals.

89 Teachers Join LACC, CRI, PAMM, MDCPS at Two-Day Workshop with Renowned Cuban Artist Aldo Menendez

LACC, FIU's Cuban Research Institute, Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and the Perez Art Museum Miami jointly hosted 89 educators from MDCPS for LACC's Feb. 7-8, 2014 teaching training workshop conducted entirely in Spanish. Led by Aldo Menendez, Cuba's first performance and photo realist artist, the workshop examined the importance of Cuban art from the "Vanguardia" of the 20th Century to the experimental art of the 21st Century, and featured demonstrations by artist Ivonne Ferrer.

On Monday, February 3rd, the Latin American and Caribbean Center hosted an event that featured guest lecturer, Alan Garcia, Former Peruvian President.

On Feb. 4, FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg and Universidad de San Martin de Porres (USMP) President Ing. José Antonio Chang Escobedo signed a Memorandum of Understanding that promises to open doors to cross-faculty projects and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

The Tri-University Conference is calling for papers. This year's theme is "Latin America and the World: Global Connections, the Environment, and other issues from an Interdisciplinary Perspective". This conference is broad and interdisciplinary, so papers coming from all disciplines will be considered. The submission deadline is February 21st.

LACC and FIU's ARC (Applied Research Center) were awarded a $75k grant from CACI International Inc. to deliver a series of roundtables focused on security in the LAC region. The 1-year grant will attract strong participation from various US government entities including US Southern Command and is designed to address the region's most pressing issues.

LACC Kicks Off 17th Annual Haitian Summer Institute

LACC is proud to kick off its 2014 Haitian Summer Institute and welcome twenty-one students from across the US and Germany to FIU for the launch of the 17th year of LACC's flagship program. The 2014 cohort includes graduate students, K-12 educators and professionals with diverse interests in Haiti, its language, culture and society. Participants complete four weeks of intensive Haitian Creole language training in Miami and the program culminates with a two-week study abroad in Haiti.

LACC Proud to Administer NIH Grant on Syndemics in the DR

Migration, Tourism and HIV/Drug Use Syndemics in the Dominican Republic, a 5-year, multi-million dollar NIH-funded research project led by Dr. Mark Padilla, investigates HIV and drug use in the tourism zones of the DR. A collaboration between FIU and Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, the project aims to describe and map the social context of men’s labor migration, drug use and HIV risk in tourism areas of the DR, and to explain drug use and HIV risk behavior among male tourism migrants.

LACC Launches Phase Two of US Department of State's Diplomacy Lab

An effort to conduct cutting-edge research, cultivate undergraduate and graduate student critical thinking, and develop and propose effective policy related to violence in Latin American and the Caribbean, LACC, FIU's Applied Research Center (ARC) and US State Department proudly partner on the LACC Diplomacy Lab. Following a successful Spring '14 lab examining prison violence, the Fall '14 lab looks at gender violence in the Caribbean and is led by LACC Research Director, Dr. Jose Miguel Cruz.

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship supports language training in Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTLs), including Portuguese and Haitian Creole. LACC is now offering fellowships for the Spring 2015 semester. The deadline for the Spring 2015 Fellowship is November 21, 2014.

LACC Awarded Prestigious NRC and FLAS Grants by US Department of Education

LACC is proud to announce that it has once again been recognized as one of the top Latin America programs in the nation. LACC has been designated a National Resource Center on Latin America by the US Department of Education and has been awarded the prestigious 4-year Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) for Latin America and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship grants, totaling over $2 million in funding to support programming and student learning related to Latin America.
