FIU experts key to understanding Obama's Cuban Policy announcement
The joint announcement by Presidents Obama and Castro that relations between Cuba and the U.S. are to be resumed after more than 50 years once again divided South Florida's Cuban community as well as hard line politicians in Congress. Helping to explain the White House move and how it will play out, FIU's many experts on Cuba and U.S.foreign policy have been in high demand by media and interested citizens worldwide. Call for Papers announced by Graduate Student Organizations
LACC's Student Organization is proud to host the 13th Annual South Florida Latin American and Caribbean Studies Graduate Student Conference on April 10, 2015 in conjunction with partners at the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University. "The goal this year," states MALAC President Emily Bello-Pardo "is to broaden the range of presentations across a wider variety of disciplines —it's open to works on all topics with a tie to LAC." 10 US Ambassadors to Central America and the Caribbean Discuss Policy in Open Forum at LACC/FIU
LACC is honored to host US Ambassadors to 5 Central American countries (El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala & Belize) and 5 Caribbean nations (Haiti, Dominican Republic, Barbados/Eastern Caribbean, Jamaica & Suriname) on Feb. 11 and 12, 2015. "It is rare to have the opportunity to dialogue with 10 US Ambassadors over the course of 2 days; certainly, it is an event not to be missed. LACC is proud to have been selected by the US Department of State as its partner," says LACC's Frank Mora.

Chicago Council Report at FIU: Latinos Resemble Other Americans in Preferences for US Foreign Policy
LACC welcomes the Chicago Council, a 22-year organization specializing in US citizens' opinions. This February they released the first survey to assess US Hispanics' view of this country's foreign policy. Findings revealed that Latinos and non-Latino Americans alike are in agreement on most critical foreign policy issues. Where do they differ? On questions of immigration, climate change, and the performance of the UN. To analyze findings on April 15, the authors are joined by FIU experts.

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship supports language training in Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTLs), including Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Quechua. LACC is sending out its final call for the Summer 2015 Fellowship. Deadline is April 21, 2015!
LAC Graduate Fellowship announced by University Graduate School
FIU's University Graduate School announced today that it is accepting nominations for students to receive a $1,000 scholarship for the 2015-16 academic year and in-state tuition rate. The program is designed to promote international education and research between FIU and LATAM countries. Interested graduate programs should nominate their students for merit-based awards.

LACC Receives $2.5M Gift from Green Family Foundation
LACC has received a generous gift of $2.5 million from the Green Family Foundation to further support LACC programming, research, training and outreach related to LAC region. The endowment to LACC, which has been renamed the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, is part of a larger $20 million transformational gift to the FIU School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). The Andean Studies Program at Latin American Caribbean Center invited Prof. Alfons Martinell, to participate in working meetings and an open Conference at Green Library, on the subject of culture financing, international cooperation and its integration to social systems in Latinoamerica.
LACC Tinker Foundation Field Research Grant Funds Species Rediscovery in Colombia
In the forests of Colombia’s Western Cordillera two cycad species are rarely seen and little understood. Research team Lopez-Gallego, Betancur, Morales, Roldan and Calonje, working under a LACC Tinker grant, were able to locate Zamia montana —believed extinct over the past 25 years —and Zamia oligodonta, slightly more common in the Risaralda region, which they determined is a species unto itself.

LACC Sponsors LAJSA XVII Conference at FIU!
The Intl Research Conference of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association, sponsored by LACC, SIPA & the Navon Professorship in Sephardic & Mizrachi Studies, welcomed community members and over 100 scholars from across the globe to FIU on June 21. Dr. Tudor Parfitt's keynote on Blackness and Jewishness was followed by a lively concert by Kazmarikstan Jazz Project. For 3 days attendees enjoyed plenaries on topics ranging from migration, history and memory to sports, theater and film studies.
LACC Kicks Off 18th Annual Haitian Summer Institute
LACC is proud to host its 18th Annual Haitian Summer Institute and welcome junior scholars, FLAS fellows and professionals from across the globe to FIU's Modesto Maidique Campus in Miami. The Institute, the only US Department of Education FLAS-approved summer program in Haitian Creole, consists of four weeks of intensive Haitian Creole language training in Miami and two amazing weeks in Haiti. Hillary Rodham Clinton Selects FIU for Policy Speech on Cuba
Before an audience of Cuban-American community leaders, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a major policy speech on Friday and pledged to lift the embargo on Cuba if elected. Clinton is the first among the wide field of 2016 presidential candidates to call for an end to the embargo stating: "Engagement is not a gift to the Castros. It's a threat to the Castros." LACC Director Frank Mora introduced Secretary Clinton.
2015 Hemisphere Magazine Examines Decentralization after 30 Years of Reforms in LAC
LACC releases its 2015 Hemisphere Magazine. More than 30 years after Latin America transitioned from dictatorships to democracy and decentralization to implant government accountability, expectations have disappointed and concerns are raised today over a slowdown, or even reversal. Guest editor Cristina A. Rodríguez-Acosta, Assistant Director of FIU's renowned Institute for Public Management and Community Service, invites leading experts to see how decentralization can be deepened.
Onè. Réspè. Middle School Students Learn about Haitian Roots
At student-led workshops on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus, 40 middle-school students who are Haitian or of Haitian descent reconnected —or in some cases connected for the first time— with their Haitian roots. Taisha Gauthier, developer and co-founder of the program, explained the need to focus on identity because "we don’t fit in with Haitians or Americans either." The program was run by the Haitian Student Organization and supported by LACC and FIU’s Global Learning Initiative.

LACC's LAMRI Marijuana Research Program Launches Site
LACC'S Latin American Marijuana Research Institute today launched its web page featuring research and news on the process of cannabis regulation in Uruguay and related debates and new developments occurring throughout the hemisphere. LAMRI is an academic initiative that collects, analyzes, and provides rigorous scientific data and information to governments, scholars, and the public interested in marijuana policy in the region and world. Supported by UCA, Uruguay, and Open Society Foundations.

Tinker Field Research Grant 2016- Application Now Open!
The Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Program is designed to provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within any Spanish and Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America to conduct pre-doctoral research and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields of study.
LACC/MDCPS Teacher Training Workshop: The US and Cuba after D17: A Closer Look
LACC, Cuban Research Institute and Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS)hosted over 50 K-12 educators from MDCPS for the LACC/CRI Sept. 23, 2015 teacher training workshop "The US and Cuba after D17: A Closer Look." With contributions from FIU professors Frank Mora, Hugh Gladwin, Marifeli Pérez-Stable and Jorge Duany, the workshop examined the change in US-Cuba policy, the transformation in Cuban, American and Cuban American attitudes, and the obstacles and drivers toward future re-connection.
LACC Hosts First Private S.FL Screening of Award-Winning Documentary "In the Eye of the Spiral"
LACC will present 2014 BAFF Documentary Award "In the Eye of the Spiral" in its first private screening in South Florida on Tuesday, 9/29/2015. Introducing the artistic philosophy "Spiralism," the film shows the incredible will of Haitian artists as they survive in a country beset by corruption and natural disasters. Telling the story are some of Haiti’s most successful artists, narrator Annie Lennox, and composer Brian Eno. Writer/Dir Eve Blouin and Dir/Producer Raynald Leconte will attend.

Call for Applications from Graduate Students: Eliana Rivero Research Scholarship in Cuban Studies
The Cuban Research Institute (CRI) has announced the competition for the 2016 Eliana Rivero Research Scholarship in Cuban Studies. The scholarship provides one graduate student the opportunity to conduct research in Cuban studies for one week each year at the CRI. It can also be used to support the visit of one FIU graduate student each year to Cuba, to pursue research on Cuba-related issues for a period of one week. Application Deadline: February 15, 2016.

Haitian Literature Scholar Nadève Ménard at LACC for Spring 2016 Course on Haitian Literature
LACC and FIU’s Department of Modern Languages have named Nadève Ménard, a scholar of Haitian literature based at the Université d’État d’Haïti, Spring 2016 Visiting Professor to teach "Haitian Creole Language and Literature: Migration." A US educated PhD, Ménard returned to her homeland to explore exile, migration and literary representations of historical figures and events. The course is offered in Haitian Creole and is open to FIU students and non-degree-seeking members of the community.
