In the forests of Colombia’s Western Cordillera two cycad species are rarely seen and little understood. Research team Lopez-Gallego, Betancur, Morales, Roldan and Calonje, working under a LACC Tinker grant, were able to locate Zamia montana —believed extinct over the past 25 years —and Zamia oligodonta, slightly more common in the Risaralda region, which they determined is a species unto itself. Congratulations to Team “LACC-Tinker” for increasing by one the number of recognized cycad species, and for beginning preservation work on another rediscovered!
