Three reports on the political, economic and security trends in the Caribbean, Central America and Latin America are selected by the Inter American Press Association to be the topic of its webinar on February 7th at noon EST. The webinar, held in Spanish and viewed by journalists throughout the hemisphere, features Luis Guillermo Solis, former president of Costa Rica, Christopher Sabatini of Global Americans and Frank Mora, LACC director.

Tinker Field Research Grants Coming Soon!

Grad Students can soon apply for significant funding from LACC’s Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Program awards. Tinker awards are designed to provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within any Spanish and Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America to conduct research and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields of study. LACC Distinguished Visiting Professor and former president of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solis, was the honored guest speaker at November's Penn-Biden Center luncheon. The event, designed for policy makers, US State Department leaders and congressional aides, was featured in the PBC's recent December newsletter.

Professor Jean Rahier (GSS), founding member of the International University Observatory of Justice for Afro-Descendants in Latin America (OJALA) and LACC faculty affiliate, has secured a grant from the Werner-Gren Fund to support a three-year graduate research assistantship. In addition to pursuing a doctoral degree in GSS (Major Anthropology) at FIU, the person selected will work as a RA for OJALA for 20 hours/week.

Luis Guillermo Solis, former president of Costa Rica and visiting professor at LACC has been appointed Head of the Electoral Mission of the OAS to the national elections in the Republic of Guatemala. The mission is responsible for hemispheric observation duties over two rounds of elections and will culminate with a final report to the OAS in Washington DC.

Modern Languages Associate Professor Melissa Baralt explores how people teach others language and how best practices can improve. Following a year's study of FIU & FMU Spanish professors, she developed the proposal "Improving Spanish-Language Teacher Training and Retention" that was awarded $100K by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant is a joint FIU/FMU project to engage and retain Black student enrollment in language classes and results from LACC's Title VI MI-Bridge project.

William Newburry, chair, Dept. of International Business and Ryder Eminent Scholar of Global Business, is the first co-recipient of the Cuervo-Cazurra & Newburry Award for contributions to the scientific capacity of academics in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Latin America and Caribbean Chapter of the Academy of International Business (AIB) delivered the first-time award in Cochabamba during its AIB-LAT 2019 conference.

Middle School students from 30 Miami Dade County schools submitted podcasts as part of the Fairchild Challenge at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Judges included co-sponsor LACC and garden volunteers. Winners are 1)understanding of ethnobotany, 2) reflection of the theme, 3)research, and 4) creativity. Winners were La Scuola Cutler Bay and Miami Country Day School.

Former El Salvador Attorney General Douglas Melendez Joins LACC & CAJ

Former El Salvador Attorney General Douglas Melendez has joined LACC and FIU's Center for the Administration of Justice as a Visiting Senior Fellow. With support of a grant from the Howard G Buffett Foundation, AG Melendez will be offering a series of workshops/capacity building programs on justice reform and anti-corruption at FIU and in Central America. AG Melendez led an important anti-corruption campaign that led to a number of high profile prosecutions.

LACC Welcomes Students from Across the US for its 22nd Annual Haitian Summer Institute

In addition to the Institute's intensive Haitian Creole language courses, participants take advantage of their time in Miami and explore Haitian history and culture through various public programs such as lectures by nationally-recognized Haitianists and Diasporic leaders, film screenings, concerts, technical training sessions and events in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. 2019 guest speakers include Haitian filmmaker, Arnold Antonin and leading feminist, activist and scholar, Sabine Lamour.

Society and Climate Change in Latin America and the Caribbean

LACC is proud to announce the publication of its Summer 2019 issue of Hemisphere, which is dedicated to examining the issue of climate change, its consequences and the importance of finding solutions. The issue, guest-edited by LACC faculty affiliates, Javier Francisco-Ortega, PhD and David Bray, PhD, features articles from leading scholars, conservationists and practitioners from throughout the Americas.
