LACC’s Society, Politics, and International Relations in Argentina 2020 - Deadline extended
The deadline for LACC’s Society, Politics, and International Relations in Argentina Study Abroad has been extended to February 24, 2020! Also, LACC currently has a few scholarships of $3,000. This means the brightest students that apply will only be paying $2,030 for the program fee! It’s a competitive scholarship but too good of a great deal to pass up! Do NOT miss your chance, the scholarship deadline has also been extended to Feb. 24, 2020.

LACC Awarded the Tinker Field Research Collaborative Grant
The Tinker Foundation has approved a 5 year grant of $75,000 for LACC. The grant will provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within any Spanish and Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America to conduct research and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their areas of study. LACC’s Director of Research, Dr. Jose Miguel Cruz, leads the grant and has been working with the support of the Tinker Foundation since 2014 to enhance graduate student research in the region.

LACC Produces Webinar Series on COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean
LACC, in cooperation with FIU's Department of Journalism + Media and the Inter-American Press Association, have produced a series of webinars that examine the public health, economic and political implications of COVID-19 in the region. This webinar series is made possible with the support of LACC's Department of Education Title VI Grant. Recorded webinars are in Spanish and available online.
LACC Welcomes Dr. Armando Matiz Reyes as Community Engagement Specialist
Dr. Armando Matiz Reyes has joined the LACC research staff to develop a database and information system on migrant physicians in the US. The database and information system will prepare FIU to manage a large research project on migration, physician mobility and the impact on the health care system in the United States.

Briefings on Cuba | The Cuban Economy: The Current Crisis, Its Policies, and Policies for the Future
The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, CasaCuba, and the Cuban Research Institute have joined forces to launch Briefings on Cuba. This new series will regularly commission analyses of Cuban politics, economy, culture, and society, and consequent policy recommendations, by top Cuba experts.

Migrations: The Hardships of Hope
LACC announces the publication of its Summer 2020 issue of Hemisphere, which is dedicated to examining migration as part of the political, social and humanitarian landscape of Latin America and the Caribbean. In this issue, guest editor Luis Guillermo Solís, LACC Interim Director and former President of Costa Rica, invites scholars to examine some of the most salient cases of migration in the Americas.
LACC Welcomes Dr. Athayde and Dr. Jenkins as New Faculty Members
Dr. Simone Athayde and Dr. Clinton Jenkins join LACC as part of our Center's Brazilian Studies Program of Excellence. Dr. Athayde is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in LACC and the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies. Dr. Jenkins is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in LACC and the Department of Earth and Environment.

LACC Associate Professor Coauthors Paper on Global Biodiversity
Dr. Clinton Jenkins has coauthored the paper "The Distribution of Biodiversity Richness in the Tropics." Published in Science Advances, the paper compares the numbers of vascular plant species in the Afrotropical Region and Latin America. Dr. Jenkins is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in LACC and the Department of Earth and Environment.

Focus Brasil Recognizes LACC Title VI K-12 Portuguese Curriculum Specialist Beatriz Cariello
Beatriz Cariello, LACC's Title VI K-12 Portuguese Curriculum Specialist, received the award for Portuguese Language Instruction from Focus Brasil Awards. Since 2013, Beatriz has led the Portuguese Language Program at Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School. Beatriz is also an active collaborator in LACC's Que Beleza Brasil! program, a series that introduces K-12 Portuguese Language students to Brazilian musical artists in live performances and presentations. Congratulations Beatriz!

Clinton Jenkins Named Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science
Each year, Clarivate identifies the world’s most influential researchers who have been most frequently cited by their peers. In 2020, fewer than 6,200 (about 0.1%) of the world's researchers have earned this distinction. LACC Brazilianist faculty member Clinton Jenkins has been named among this elite group, recognized for exceptional research influence, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science.

LACC and Caribbean Policy Consortium (CPC) Launch Caribbean Policy Series
With an emphasis on the Anglophone Caribbean, The LACC/CPC Caribbean Policy Series includes three webinars with experts from the Greater Caribbean region, moderated by FIU faculty and CPC members, and a series of policy-oriented papers addressing economic, political, and strategic matters that will be published electronically by LACC. The series is part of LACC's renewed commitment to expand programming related to the Anglophone Caribbean and begins with the first webinar on January 14, 2021.
REACH/LACC Virtual Photo Voice Project Featured in Local News
CBS4 News produced a story on FIU's "Greetings Covidians," a virtual photo voice project on COVID-19 in Miami. The project is in collaboration with the Research Network for Health and Society (REACH), which is part of LACC's Health and Society Program of Excellence. Jack Vertovec, PhD candidate in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at FIU, discusses the project, its use of visual engagement and critical reflection, and participants' perspectives on COVID-19.
