The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a 2022-26 US Department of Education Title VI grant. LACC successfully competed for both the National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grants, securing a total award of $2,215,296 (an increase of over $100,000 from the previous award cycle, making it LACC's largest Title VI award to date).
We are grateful for the leadership of Associate Director, Liesl Picard, and the valuable contributions of Lindsay Dudley and Viroselie Caviedes in their preparation of both grant proposals.
Both the NRC and the FLAS awards allow LACC to continue its support of research, training, outreach, and language study as a nationally recognized center of excellence on Latin America and the Caribbean.
NRC funding will allow LACC to build upon current instructional and language/area studies training strengths. It will also launch new initiatives designed to increase the policy relevance of LACC’s solutions-based research and programming, expand professional school collaboration in support of pre-professional technical training in areas of national need, and enhance literacy related to technology-based educational tools. Proposed activities prioritize engaging the depth and diversity of perspectives of FIU faculty, students, and community partners.
100% of FLAS will fund fellowships for meritorious students studying Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Quechua and Quichua, and at least 60% of awarded FLAS fellows will be high-quality applicants with demonstrated significant financial need.
The 2022-26 Title VI award marks the thirty-ninth year that LACC has been designated an NRC since its founding 43 years ago.
